Weaving my Own Story

A History Snippet
While living in London in the 80’s, my ex husband
and I knew we wanted to return home, we hatched a plan to go to College to learn handbag design and production.
Roll on several years and our apartment had become our workshop. Returned from London with our heads full of possibilities and our car full of equipment and leather. We co- founded Holden Leathergoods (I was formerly known as Jackie Holden), which was bootstrapped by hard work and determination.
It was a dual experience of success and stress, when I left the company in 2000 we were employing 7 people. During that time, we had a retail shop in Dingle town as well as the workshop. We supplied Brown Thomas and other prestigious retailers. It was an enormous learning curve and each strand gifted me invaluable lived experience, which I have since layered with a further 24 years, where I have the privilege of working with 1000’s of business owners.
Business is a powerful teacher, it is a mirror and challenges us to take self responsibility.
1989 marked the beginning of my long standing relationship with business and brand, which today I blend with personal and spiritual growth alchemy.
Following my exit from the leather business, my journey of finding my own identity and path truly began, I developed a connection with myself for the first time ever, I also reclaimed my maiden name. There is a recurring theme of claiming and reclaiming in my life, which often shows up in work with my clients.
I support business owners to claim their rightful place in their business, find their voice, grow their confidence and where needed reframe their business aligned with what is correct for them now. Similar to a potted plant needing fresh soil, we too evolve and grow and need a larger pot to be able to breath better and do what we are here to do with greater ease.
Headlines of how my business and life has woven into Business Weaving

Transition Tunnel 2000- 2005
I left my first business with the lived experience of building a creative business and brand on a shoestring.

Catalyst
A catalyst for soul-searching in between juggling being a single Mum to two young children, work, home renovations and up-skilling. It was an intense period with a slow and continuous underlying activity of re-imagining my work and life.

My First Job Post-Business
A packing job in Louis Mulcahy ' pottery, it fitted around school hours and gave me a chance to reset my nervous system as I was reshaping my life and shedding outdated masks.

SHEP Course (4 years, part-time)
Personal development and facilitation training. Followed by specialist training in stress management, and communication. I loved it and soaked up the learning, it continues to inform my life and work.

Degree and Multiple Roles
Somehow squeezed in a part-time HR degree from National College of Ireland (traveling to Dublin fortnightly for 3 years) while also doing various marketing, facilitation, and coordinating gigs. I was very drawn to training, development, and organisational behaviours. It naturally unfolded and opportunities came my way, it was a natural fit.

Freelance & Training
Delivered FETAC courses in further education colleges in Communications, Starting a Business, Personal Effectiveness while freelancing for businesses (trade events, product development).

Mentor
Accepted on to the mentor panel for Enterprise Ireland and Local Enterprise Offices specialising in creative and well being sectors.

Co-Founder
Co-founded Business IQ with Sheila Anne O’Leary a training company for business owners, delivering Start Your Own Business, Retail, and Women in Business Programmes. Another roll at developing a new brand, course design, and course delivery. We were in demand, several years in I was burning out, it was intense schedule when combined with my family commitments. Slowly, it was becoming more evident that my heart was being pulled in a new direction.

Professional Development:
Family Constellation Training, Trauma informed Leadership Coaching Certificate, a myriad of workshops in Spiritual and Self Exploration practices. Rhythms of Regulation 6 month nervous system training with Deb Dana, a leading expert in Polyvagal (nervous system) theory. I was delving deeper into personal growth. Blending business and personal growth became more obvious to me, I was already doing it already, just not saying it explicitly.

Another Transition & Re-imagining (2018/2019)
I am grateful to Sheila Anne for her continued friendship and support during this time as we built the team in Business IQ for me to be able to leave and begin again.

2019 Business Weaving was Born
My beloved daughter Róisín came up with the name ‘Business Weaving’ representing the threads of our lives and business woven together to create a tapestry true to ourselves.
And a transition like no other
Weaving my Own Story
My daughter Róisín was my biggest advocate and supporter of Business Weaving.
Róisín had grown up around business, mine and her Dad’s. she was people and business savvy from a young age.
She was my tech Queen and general all round go to, before lock down she had returned from her teaching and traveling in Vietnam and we developed it together, she was free lancing at this time. She knew the mechanics of my business inside out.
During a covid window she moved to Spain and worked remotely. Her Spanish life was interrupted with a diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer in the summer of 2021. She died at the age of 30, as I lay alongside her on the 11th December 2023. I am forever profoundly changed by all of this including my relationship with death and life.
When I was able to lift my head again it strengthened my knowing in relation to Business Weaving. We spend so much of our precious life working, it is important for our soul and well being to minimise performing and effort and replace it with more alignment and ease. Our business is an expression of our soul purpose if we choose to work it that way.
Words cannot possibly convey the depth of my grief and loss. This has stretched and shaped me all over again.
It was and sometimes continues to be excruciating and alongside the shock and disbelief as I find my feet once again. I feel her with me. I feel her echo in my work, including nudging me to redo my website and speak out more about the importance of working in alignment. I owe it to both of us, speaking from my authentic voice and working with others to find their authenticity.

Blessings and peace on her soul
Cathal
For my sister, a tall beech tree
“Róisín is in the woods, and there are robins in her hair.
Her roots reach into the earth’s deep, warm heart
They are dens for foxes, and for pixies
This is no exaggeration to say – sunlight is her smiling
At night, the stars are hers.
Galaxies nestle in her branches like birds
Infinite dance of things. Noon into night.
Spring takes winter by the bough
Days blink back tears overhead.
Butterflies hang baskets round her
The seasons leave her flowers
Bluebells, buttercup. Wild rose
In autumn, I picked her a four leaf clover
Which she pressed in a cookbook
Soon, I will look for it, among her recipes
orange cake, green tea syrup – and there it will be
Today, or tomorrow maybe,
I will look round her roots for another
I grew this for you, she will say. I made sure it was here.
and it will be true –
every living being has energy
Pulsing, electric field
When it rains, it is my sister, drinking the sky
Around her, clear, pure air
This is her alchemy. She is becoming a tree, and now
The horizon is her crown,
vastness, clouds and blue, warm sun, stars and moons.
My mother walks a deerhound in all weathers
Together, they are gathered as one.
Dog digging in the dirt
My mother, speaking to the heavens
Embracing the trunk of a great beech
The wheel turning, all round us
She shelters us now. Róisín.
Taller than ever. Queen of the forest
My sister was a tower of will.
Willing herself upright
believing herself to health
She almost won, you know
Now, she has won peace, and leaves wreath her hair
Squirrels and martens chase round her
Roots weaving the earth
Branches braiding the heavens
Tree of life. Centre of the world.
Seedlings grow in her shade
We used to play together in the elm by the gate
Of our garden. Baile Beag.
Hairy mollies crawling through a palm
Till it itched. I ache to return.
When we were children, Róisín. I knew you were forever.
Tá mo deirfiur san coill
Le spideoga ina gruaig
Fraomhaca domhan domhain
Ag anall anois, go saor”
